You know it, I know it, everybody knows it so I might as well get straight to it and tell you what I am selling: time. Yes, like that movie with Justin Timberlake when everyone is paid on time, except that you will pay me your preferred currency and get time in return.
You’re probably asking yourself, “How the hell are you going to sell me time? That stuff is intangible, it can’t be sold, it just happens.” To which I’ll reply, exactly, it happens, it passes at it’s own pace not caring one way or another what you do with it.
When you choose to just sit there scrolling the day away, looking for inspiration, it slips away. When you finally get a chance to lie down on the couch to do nothing, it slows down. Or, it would if you took the time to lie on the couch to do nothing.
When is the last time you did nothing?
I mean absolutely nothing, just breathed. In. Out. In. Out. That’s it, that kind of nothing, empty mind, no stress, no tasks, just space. It has probably been a while. Endless content streams and interruptive marketing ensure you have nothing to do. Add starting a business to the mix and you are probably about ready to go mad.
Idea, research, research, plan, plan, plan, oh wait, where’s the action? The cycle stopped at the planning stage, and nothing happened. As I write this, I myself am procrastinating. I know the only way I will succeed is by making cold calls and pitching my service, but that’s scary. I could be rejected.
Rejection hurts. It would be so much easier to fail because I never tried than to fail because I truly gave it my all. Fortunately, I got myself a coach. I know that Monday evening, she will ask me how many calls I made this week. I know she will ask me what steps I took this week to get clients. If my only answer to her is “I was distracted,” then I know I am to blame. As of now, that would be my answer, so it’s time to stop typing. It’s time to start calling. It’s time to do what needs to be done.
